The physical hair you see on your head and style daily, is the result of a sequence of complex cellular functions. Hair constantly grows from cellular division, and like nails, have vastly different structures and function associated that deliver the end product, a hardened, keratinized hair growing out from the scalp.
There are a variety of things that can go wrong with cellular division that is hair growth. The strength and structure of the hair bulb, hair follicle and hair can be effected when things go wrong at cellular division. The hair bulb is the lock that holds the hair at the base of the hair follicle. The hair bulb is supposed to be strong and resistant as it in is made of the same substance that holds our teeth in. The hair follicle houses the hair as it transitions from a soft cellular structure to a hardened hair fiber and has many associated appendages.

In most cases when this happens, the hair still grows, but the hair grows back thinner, weaker, loss of colour, loss of luster, curl and shine. In certain situations, such as common iron deficiency, the hair may not even grow back at all and remain dormant.
The result is always diffuse, thank goodness. Diffuse hair loss and diffuse hair thinning do not affect every hair on the head, it is a diffuse thinning of the hair shared diffusely over the scalp. Diffuse hair loss and diffuse hair thinning is not in patterns or patches as can occur with female pattern thinning, male pattern thinning and autoimmune types of alopecia. Both pattern hair thinning and autoimmune alopecia, in most cases are the secondary problem and have occurred because of the compromised health of the hair at a cellular level and direct result of body health.
